Athlete Enhancement Program Details
The Athlete Enhancement Program (AEP) is the emerging athlete support program of ASDC aimed at providing high quality sports science programming to emerging high performance athletes in Red Deer and Central Alberta. The AEP is offered to team sport and individual sport athletes who are emerging at the provincial or national level.
As of 2010, the ASDCC has adopted the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model put forth by the Canadian Sport For Life. The program is a three tiered approach based on the athlete’s competitive level and LTAD stage. Below is a basic outline of the program, the levels and what can be expected at each level.
Training to Train Stage – An Introduction to Sport Sciences (Bronze & Silver)
Endurance, Strength, Speed Physical Conditioning
- Focus on general strength, speed, flexibility and aerobic training
- Attend regular fitness times at the Red Deer College Fitness Centre
- Athropometric and fitness testing throughout the year
- Attend Speed/Agility Camp to increase technical sprint/speed skills
Fundamental Mental Skills
- Attend 3 bronze level & 3 silver level Mental Skills Sessions
General Nutrition Information
- Attend 1 bronze level and 1 silver Nutrition session
Other Complimentary Sessions
- Attend Media & Public Speaking Training
- Learn about sport injury prevention and recovery
- Attend a special session with an Inspirational Guest Speaker

Training to Compete Stage - An Introduction to Individualized Programming (Gold)
General Conditioning
- Focus on general strength, speed, flexibility and aerobic training, with additional individual specialization
- Attend open fitness times at Red Deer College Fitness Center
- Athropometric and fitness testing throughout the year
Introduction to Applied Mental skills
- Attend monthly gold level Mental Skills Sessions throughout the year
- Small group session based on similar type sports, where feasible
Introduction to Applied to Nutrition
- Attend 1 gold level nutrition session
- Small group session based on similar type sports, where feasible
Other Complimentary Sessions
- Attend Media & Public Speaking Training
- Learn about sport injury prevention and recovery

General Conditioning
- Incorporate individualized programming into Red Deer College Fitness Centre workouts
Applied Mental Skills
- Meet with Mental Skills trainer for specific needs as they arise
- Individual Sessions
Applied Nutrition
- Work out applied nutritional needs as they arise or
- Individual nutritional analysis or session

Criteria for this stage:
- Competing at an international level, but not a nationally carded athlete
- Fits within the Train to Compete or Train to Win stages of the CS4L continuum
- Resides in Central Alberta
- Aged 15+
- Competes in Alberta Sport Connection recognized sports
